The 2016 Otago District Master’s Tournament was hosted by the Taieri Squash Club over the weekend with the 2016 champions decided – Shaun Madden (Cromwell) and Ange Button (Otago). Defending women’s champion Deb Shirley from Invercargill had to pull out due to injury leaving top seed Ange Button to battle it out and take the title in four from club mate, third seed Lyndal Askin. Shaun Madden won in straight sets over Taieri and 2015 champion Mark Fairweather.
The theme for the tournament was ‘Nursery versus Nursing Home’ so when a few residents from a local rest home popped in for a look and a bit of socialising, it made for some very interesting and competitive banter... World Masters Games 2017 celebrates one of the most important milestone in the lead up to the Games – ‘One Year to Go’! Today the countdown clock as dipped under 365 days until the Opening Ceremony at Eden Park officially launches 10 days of sporting excitement and camaraderie.
There is diversity amongst the athletes who’ve already signed up to the Games, with competitors from more than 50 countries already confirming their registrations, and ages ranging from 25-95 years.
